Today I looked at 2 spam fiters, SPAMfighter: Spam Filter Outlook/Outlook Express 6.2.41 and Spam Bully for Outlook Express 4.1.0.12.

SPAMfighter:Spam Filter Outlook/Outlook Express 6.2.41 is downloadable from download.com. It got an average user rating of 4 and a half stars. It is free to try for 30 days but is $29 to buy. This program blocks spam and phishing e-mails. SPAMfighter has almost 5 million users, when several of them report spam from the same e-mail address, the e-mail address is automatically blocked for all users.

Spam Bully for Outlook Express 4.1.0.12 is also downloadable from download.com. It got an average user rating of 3 stars. It is free to try for 14 days, but costs $29.95. Spam Bully allows you to block and allow e-mail addresses, IP addresses, and words or phrases. And also but country and language. It can also report spammers to their hosts.
It can forward good e-mails to your mobile phone, and automatically delete spam as it downloads.


I also looked at 2 proxy servers, CC Proxy Server 6.5 and Proxy+ 3.0.

CC Proxy Server 6.5 can be downloaded from download.com. It received an average user rating of 4 stars. It is free to try (3 user trial) and is $69 to buy. It supports dial-up, ISDN, DSL, and DDN connections, and helps you to build a proxy server. It can also act as HTTP/FTP/SOCKS/mail/news/telnet proxy servers as well. It has content and web filtering and bandwidth control.

Proxy+ 3.0 can also be downloaded from download.com. It received an average user rating of 4 stars. And it is completely free to use for 3 users. It has a a full SMTP mail server, proxy cascading by ICP protocol, and Socks server support for ICQ.

Today we looked at spam and phishing e-mails.
We also looked at spam filters and how they work. Like the Barracuda Spam Firewall, Symantec's spam filiter. And I also looked at reveiws of spam filters at spam-filter-review.toptenreviews.com.

We looked at proxy server software. We looked at setting up Internet Explorer to use proxy server, and proxies are good for improving efficiency, improving safety, protecting IP addresses from being sent, and keeping track of what is being looked at on the internet.

We looked at Vicomsoft's Internet Gateway, and Wingate proxy server.

Today we did some research on some free anti-virus software like AVG, avast!, comodo, kaspersky (free-trial), avira, and cyberhawk.
We installed and compaired 2 of them, and looked at some of their features and configured them on a virtual pc.

We looked at the difference between real-time and schelduled scanning, and we configured antivirus software for schelduled scanning.

Today we talked and learned about what ports are, port blocking, blocking and allowing applications, allowing access for only certain networks or computers, blocking other kind of traffic, and setting up firewall rules.
We also compaired Windows XP's firewall and Comodo Firewall, I prefered Comodo firewall because of the user interface look easier to use than Windows XP's firewall.

We did some revision for the exam, which included the difference between different kinds of virus (eg. Trojans and worms)spyware and adware.
We also learned about Virtual PC, and next week we will look at anti-virus software.

Today I learned the difference between spyware and malware.
We took a McAfee site advisor quiz about which sites had spyware, and adware. As a class we scored 6 out of 8.
